|I do not understand how to do this. I have heard people talk about it before but I don't know how to change or add one to a train system. I think I know how to add and delete crossings as well as add, change and remove cars from a train.

what do you mean exactly with "starting point"?
The railways are layed in loops, at least for the trains which can be controled by the player.
So, I would say that adding a starting point does not really make sense in this case.

|You create a spline. There is a S and an E. DO NOT ROTATE. If you rotate the spline your train wheels will be displayed sideways. This is why it's a pain but you are better off starting new splines rather than copying unless you are just planning to move them as entire group. You also need to be sure the visibility is checked so you can move/create node/points. The insert key adds nodes then you grab them just like you would the 3D manipulator. Drawing the spline is similar to drawing curves in a paint editor.
