I am working on a 48X map. I made a the DEM 12,291 pixels. Everytime I open up the editor it crashes.

LOL .. good joke .. next time try with reasonable values.
1x - 4x - 16x - ... guess what's next. *g* (hint: 64x)
However better forget it. Neither current PCs nor the FS engine is prepared for more than 16x.

What is the size of DEM need to be to build a 64x map? What is km size of the map?

It's a simple math calculation. A standard map (1x) has an edge length of 2km.
For multi-sized maps the edge length factor follows the rule 2^n = 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, .. - the resulting square size is 2^n*2^n = (2^n)^2 = 1, 4, 16, 64, 256, ..

The DEMs and other auxiliary files are sized depending on various settings inside the i3d (eg. cellSize). You need to know about the meaning of the terrain/layer attributes.
For a rough estimation examine the sizes of the standard map files, eg. the weight maps have a size of 2048x2048pix (~4Mpix). Now take the above factors for edge length or square and multiply.

well im working on a map x16 but at the edges the map phases out (cant see the terrain) anybody know any good workaround for this?
im running on very high and my computer is plenty good enough for this.

If you are talking about in the editor, there is a script kicking around out there that allows the editor to render the entire 16x map so you can see all of it.

Please tell me how to find in the script the possibility of increasing the render of the x16 maps?
