Hello,
I have moved and renamed both .cache files from savegame folder to maps folder, but when I open GE it is still loading default textures. Is it possible to somehow edit textures from savegame?

I did some experiments and noticed that GE always loads textures from .png files in mapDE folder and when the .i3d is saved both .png and .cache files are overwritten, ist this conclusion correct?

I'm not sure what you mean?

The TEXTURES are never changed, neither by the game nor by the editor. You can imagine them as brushes in a paint program. So these textures are 'stamped' onto the map.
If you want to change textures, you must edit them in an external paint program.

Changed/edited is the distribution or arrangement. In GE by "terrain detail texture paint mode", in game by landscape editor. These changes are written to "terrain.nmap.cache" and "terrain.lod.type.cache" (in GE/map named with leading "{mapname}.i3d.*" )).
Since ingame changes on ground can also touch foliage and cultivator states, these files are also updated.

I would like to edit arrangement of textures on map. I did some painting already in-game, but there is one large area on map where I would like to change textures only but not the foliage, so i thought it would be best to to do this in GE. With fruits it is easy you just take fruit_density.gdm from savegame and replace fruit_density.gdm in maps/map.de folder, edit fruits arrangement in GE, and move fruit_density.gdm back in savegame folder.

I tried to the the same with "terrain.nmap.cache" and "terrain.lod.type.cache" but the GE loads texture arrangement only from .png files in mapDE folder, basically I cannot get arrangement of textures from savegame to GE. Is there a way to make the GE to read arrangement of textures from "terrain.nmap.cache" and "terrain.lod.type.cache" instead of .png files in mapDE folder?

Like I explained above:
You must copy the savegame's "terrain.nmap.cache" and "terrain.lod.type.cache" into map folder and rename them as "{mapname}.i3d.terrain.nmap.cache" and "{mapname}.i3d.terrain.lod.type.cache" - just like the present files in map. Be sure to have deleted these before renaming.
The GE doesn't know about these changes, so it might be necessary to do a "File -> Reload" to update GE caches.

Does this still work for FS22? I still get any changes to the terrain sculpting but not any changes that were made by painting.

edit: so it looks like copying the files will add the changes to the map, but only the terrain sculpting is viewable in giants editor - is there a way I can see the painted changes in giants editor? I can't seem to find any setting that allows that
