can you use the standard windows zipping system or do I have to get win zip?

I'd recommand 7zip, a very universal packer/archiver.
But the Windows inbuilt zip works also. You have probably made a mistake in folder hierarchy. Pay attention to NOT zip the root modfolder, but its content.
