I'm not sure you're going to get a detailed explanation here on how to create a custom texture. Have you ever created any textures for FS19? It's not a matter of just copy and paste, there are few things you need to get your head around. The R B G and alpha channels within the texture all perform a different function that affect the overall image. They changed things up in FS22 by including paralax occlusion maps into the texture as well. So basically you are going to have to make a height map, diffuse map, normal map, Smoothness map, AO map, and possibly an edge map. The smoothness map, AO map, and height map are eventually included into the RBGA channels so you ultimately end up with just a diffuse and normal map. The images used to be saved as 512x512 as a DXT5 but that may have changed to 1024x1024 and I'm not sure if they still use DXT5 or not. I haven't messed with the textures in FS22 yet to give you a definitive answer.

So basically what I'm saying is that if you don't have any experience with texture mapping you are going to want to do a whole lot of Googling and an equal amount of experimentation and things will eventually start making sense. There are a handful of diehards that do nothing but textures but you don't see too much of it here. Once I start pulling apart and reassembling textures in FS22 I might be of more help but for now that's the best advice I can give you.

BTW. I totally agree, what's the point of wet sand if you don't have the dry to go with it?

yeah thanks for the explanation

Terrain Textures are now BC7 not DXT5 and you will also need to edit the header with a hex editor after converting to BC7 as Giants now use a custom dds header, parts of which are used for the AI.
For further info see several posts in the Giants forum.

for example.

Good to know Colin, thanks. I spent at least a good two hours or so on your website last night brushing up. I definitely learned a few things I didn't know before. I also started goofing with Materialize ... I only ever used PS for my textures but Materialize looks promising.
