All the i3d files I tried in the pack have errors when trying to open in GE, I'm wondering if Giants used a newer version than we have available.

Did you unzip the file? I don't get errors, just can NOT see the models. At least you can learn from the xml files.

It would appear that the shape files are still effectively encrypted so the only useful items in the pack are the textures and possibly the seedTreater.lua

Yes unzipped it, possibly Colin is right, although if you open them in notepad++ they look normal.
