How do I open a new map?

I'm new to map making and while I've found a lot of information about the Giants editor already, I still don't understand which files I need.

Is there a way to start with an empty map or do i have to use an existing map? If so, how do I open Felsbrunn and which file(s) do I need for that?

I used the Modding e-book you mentioned. But when I try to open the map file, the editor closes after a few seconds. (I tried mapBase.i3d, mapDE.i3d and mapUS.i3d). Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

See GE log for further info (USER\AppData\Local\GIANTS Editor 64bit 8.0.0\editor_log.txt).

If the GE closes/crashes when opening a standard map, the most common reason is a GPU which doesn't support OpenGL 4.5.

Just checked an my GPU does support OpenGL 4.5.

The path to the game datas is not set. Register it in Preferences.

You didn't install the game properly. So registry entries couldn't be set.
Due to this other problems can occur, eg. a patch can't be installed.
I'd recommand, you re-install the FS17. Install manually: rightclick on setup -> "run as administrator".

I copied the maps to another folder en then I tried to open them, which is why it didn't work. When I open them from the actual game folder I have no problems at all.

Isn't there a way to open maps from a different folder than the original game folder? I don't wanna mess up my game.

Yes - you can adapt/edit manually the pathes within i3d in EVERY mod you ever make. Do you really want?
