how to set up pc so that i can have more than one editor installed at a time?

uh? That's no problem - I have installed GE 5,6,7,8.
If you double-click on i3d, you'll get a requester which editor you want to use.
You should install manually into folders you created before. I'd recommand normal folders, NOT into "C:\program files ..". Best is another drive/partition.

thanks for reply. your sec line there is the one that i can't get. (the requester) no matter how i install, only the last one is active.

You must install the GE "as administrator" else the filetype '.i3d' isn't associated automatically.
You should always install anything "as admin." to go sure that everything is setup properly.
